On the Road: Cooper Tire largest employer in Texarkana | Community Spirit
For nearly 30 years, the largest employers in Texarkana were the Red River Army Depot and the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant.
But times have changed, and now Cooper Tire and Rubber company has taken over.
"This plant is a blessing to the community it is a blessing to the families around here, says David Boone, president of the United Steel Workers Union Local 752. "We’ve got a lot of positive things going on in the plant.”
Cooper Tire began operations in 1964 and is now the largest employer in the city of Texarkana, making more than 10 million tires a year.
"We are scheduled to hit our 350 million tire in January of 2013, which is a huge milestone for this plant,” says Cooper Tire plant manager Scott Cole.
The Texarkana plant employes more than 1,700 and has an annual payroll of $150 million, and recently recieved a national award for putting 193 military veterans and reservists to work. "It makes me feel good inside to be able to hire those people, to give them employment long term employment in the local area, to keep those people locally,” Cole says.
Cole credits the success of the plant to a good workforce in the area and cooperation from the city of Texarkana. “Our plan here is to continue to grow this plant and grow the employment base here to support Texarkana the region and Cooper tire as a company."
