The Texas Department of Transportation says it will take about a year-and-a-half to completely rebuild the intersection at South Lake Drive (U.S. 59) and Kings Highway (FM 989).
The TxDOTD recently approved the plans for the renovation and awarded JW Payne Construction of New Boston the contract to rebuild the intersection. They submitted the lowest bid for the project at $3.7 million.
“We have had a lot of trouble with the asphaltic pavement rutting and wearing out at this intersection due to the heavy truck traffic on US 59,” said Kenny Icenhower, area engineer for TxDOT in Texarkana. “We will be completely reconstructing the intersection to replace the asphaltic pavement with concrete which should hold up much better to heavy traffic.”
Icenhower said the reconstruction will start this coming January and should take about 17 months to finish.
